한강변을 걸으며 Walking along the Han river

 

버드나무 푸르고

개양귀비꽃 붉다

저 아래 보에 갇힌 강은

호수처럼 넓고 은빛을 띠는데

주변의 경치는 평화롭다

하늘엔 흰구름마저 두둥실 떠 있다

 

사는 게 단순하지만 내 심정은 복잡하길래

가선 안될 저쪽은 아예 쳐다보지도 않으려고

나는 생각의 벽을 쌓았더니

그런대로 질서가 잡히고 있다

 

저 밑의 보를 헐어 버리면

강은 바닥을 들어내고

버드나무는 목말라하며

꽃은 시들겠지

 

내 생각의 벽이 무너지면

인생이 황폐해져 사막같이 보이려나

강변을 걸으면 늘 역설에 물든다

 

As I walk along the Han River

The willows are green

And the poppies are red

The river is trapped in the dam below

The river is as wide and silver as a lake

And the surroundings are peaceful

Even the sky has white clouds floating in it

 

Life is simple, but my feelings are complex

After I am building a wall of thoughts within myself

Not to look at the prohibited side

There is order in my thinking

And my life is organized and enjoyed

 

If the dam below were broken down

The river would reveal its bottom

The willows would be thirsty

And the flowers would wither

 

If the wall of my thinking were eliminated

Would my life become a desert?

As I walk along the riverbank

I am always immersed in paradox
